Our Commitment

The Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain & Ireland (SCPS) and the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain & Ireland (CCPS) are committed to providing a professional environment that is safe, inclusive, respectful and free from harassment.

Changes to UK legislation have strengthened the expectation on organisations to take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment: employers are now required to show that they have taken all reasonable steps to prevent it in the workplace. Neither the Society nor the College employs its members and registrants, so these legal duties do not apply directly to our activities. We nevertheless support the principles that underpin the legislation and are committed to promoting a culture of dignity, respect and inclusion across everything we organise.

The Society and the College take a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment, unwanted sexual conduct, intimidation, bullying, discrimination and victimisation.

We expect all members, registrants, delegates, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and guests taking part in our activities to conduct themselves professionally and to treat others with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times.

Any behaviour that undermines the dignity, wellbeing or participation of others is inconsistent with the standards and values of the Society and the College, and may be addressed through our governance and professional conduct processes.

Where this applies

Activities: Conferences, AGMs, educational meetings, seminars and webinars, including online sessions · Hospital accreditation visits and quality assurance activities · Examinations, assessments, training and mentoring arranged by the Society or the College · Council, committee, Strategic Oversight Group and other governance meetings · Social activities, receptions, dinners, travel and accommodation arranged or facilitated as part of any of the above

People: Society members, College registrants, trainees, students and candidates · Officers, Council and committee members, assessors, examiners, mentors and volunteers · Speakers, faculty, delegates and guests · Staff and contractors engaged by the Society or the College, and suppliers, exhibitors and sponsors and their representatives

‍

Conduct in a member's or registrant's own workplace is a matter for their employer in the first instance. The College separately considers whether professional standards are engaged.

‍

How To Raise A Concern

‍

Intro: Concerns may be raised by the person affected or by anyone who witnesses inappropriate conduct. Anonymous concerns will be considered, although they may limit what action can be taken.

01 During an event or activity: Speak to the event lead or a designated contact. Their names and how to reach them are in the joining instructions, on the opening slide and at the registration desk.

02 At any other time: Email the Society Secretary at SCPSsecretary@scps.org.uk or the College Secretary at secretary@ccpsgbi.org

03 If anyone is in immediate danger: Call the emergency services: 999 in the UK, 112 or 999 in Ireland. The Society and the College will never discourage anyone from reporting a matter to the police.

What Happens Next

‍

01  You will be listened to and kept safe: The event lead or designated contact will make sure the people involved are safe, take the concern seriously and explain what will happen next, without investigating or making judgements.

02  Proportionate action may be taken: Where justified, the conduct will be required to stop, the people involved separated, or a participant asked to leave the activity or its social elements.

03 It is handled in confidence: Concerns are shared only with those who need to know. Where a member or registrant is involved and the threshold is met, the matter may be considered under the College's Disciplinary Policy and Procedures; possible criminal conduct is referred to the police.

Callout: Absolute confidentiality cannot be promised where there is a risk to safety or a legal duty to share information.
