Rebecca Friar

SCPS Executive Committee Member

Title

Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientist, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield

Role

I was elected to the Executive Committee at the SCPS AGM in 2025. My role will primarily be within the safety committee.

Clinical Interests

My clinical interests are centred on advanced cardiac procedures, with a primary focus on major aortic surgery. I have been fortunate to contribute to the successful development of the major aortic service in Sheffield, not only through my technical skills but also by encouraging Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) integration. I have experience in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS), including mini-AVRs, Port Access Mitral Surgery, and ART-AVRs. I have a keen interest in safety culture, and hope to expand on this in the coming years with my role on the safety committee.

Professional Profile

Prior to my career as a perfusionist, I completed a degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Leeds. I then moved to the University of Sheffield Medical School to pursue my PhD in Oncology. I started my Perfusion career at St Barts in 2016, graduating and gaining accreditation in 2018 through NESCOT's final cohort. Since joining Sheffield as a junior member of the team, I have been encouraged to take on further departmental responsibilities and was appointed as the Safety Lead in 2024.
